Patient Self Request Testing

QML Pathology offers a limited range of self-requested pathology.  In certain circumstances, patients can request a pathology test without the authorisation of a doctor or registered practitioner.

Please note:
In order to receive a Medicare rebate, pathology tests must be ordered by a registered practitioner (doctor, midwife, nurse practitioner). That's why tests ordered by an individual will not qualify for a Medicare rebate. The tests will need to be paid in full at the time of the collection.

Pathology tests are usually requested by a patient’s doctor as they are medically qualified and trained to interpret and analyse the results after a full assessment of the clinical signs and symptoms a person may be experiencing. Some panels of testing are quite complex. There may be the possibility of misinterpretation of pathology results in the absence of advice from the appropriately trained and qualified general practitioner.

Patients using self-requested testing will need to consult their GP if they require professional guidance and test interpretation. QML Pathology does not provide any interpretive services for results of self-requested tests.
